OJV FF Feature & Follow #84

Fun Question of the Hop:

Q: I like unique names for characters and am looking forward to coming up with some when I start writing. What's the most unique character name you've come across?

Ah... I like names that fit with the language of where ya are. I thought F'lar and F'nor were fun (Dragon fliers of Pern - now Pern is a cool name. Short and memorable!!) although I never quite knew what to do with the absence of vowel. Is it Eff-Lar or Flar? I went with Flar 'til I studied linguistics and then I wanted to add a click or a swallow to make it really hard to say.  Yes... ways I amuse myself.  (Now you know why "Colorimetry" - 'cause it sounds like yer swallowing. I chuckle every time.)

My favorite names flow smoothly. Gemma is cool in A Great And Terrible Beauty - I started with hard G, but switched to soft G when someone nicknamed her Gem, which is adorable.

Does anyone else fiddle with names in their head?  I had my own pronunciations for tons of things, 'cause I rarely bother to look them up.  Now... Paksenarrion I eventually looked up just to make sure the emphasis fell second to last, like I guessed, but I still shorten it to Paks in my head. I mean, what a name?!  I thought it was awkward when I took it for a location instead of a girl... a GIRL!!  (Sorry if you read this, Elizabeth... oh, who'm I kidding.  If ANY authors read this, please let me know so I can swoon. I still have you on a pedestal for actually finishing something.)

Thx for stopping by!!    Comment so I can return the fun!!!
