I noticed on your site that one of you got the idea... How do you work together writing the stories?
Jason: After trying several methods while learning "the dance" we've found that mapping out the plot points from start to finish through verbal brainstorming and then collaborating on writing each "scene" through Skype or in person (when possible) is the way we are most efficient in our process.

Brian: Agreed. We had to get very creative with our efforts because we don't live close to each other--I'm in Oregon and Jason's in California--so it's not as though we could just get together over coffee every day and hash things out. Man would that have been nice though! It took us some time, but we definitely learned several ways NOT to work effectively on a project, so at least there's that!
How did the story come together?
Jason: It started with my original vision and catching Brian up on all that was already in my head. From there we created a dystopian future Earth, backstory on more than a dozen main characters, the story line for book one, and preliminary plot points for books two through eight in the series ...then we wrote the book. :)
Brian: I can still remember when Jason first came to me with this story back in the summer of 2008. He pitched me the idea and I was hooked. My response was basically, "I want in on this today!" Apart from writing, music is one of my biggest passions in life, and when he told me about this idea I immediately got a sense of what the soundtrack to this story would sound like. P.O.D., Linkin Park, Flyleaf and the like have stirred through my mind as I have written scenes or created settings, while at others I thought of the darker, more sinister strains of certain film scores like Road to Perdition. Music played a key role in helping determine the mood and setting for a number of these scenes, and helped crystallize our vision for the world of New Earth which we create in this novel and will ultimately learn more about as the series progresses.
Do you each have a favorite scene?
Jason: There are two that stand out to me. One is a scene where the team is being initiated for actual battle and I was literally laughing out loud writing it. The second is a scene following the teams failure on their first mission and there's a very poignant visual at the end that effects me as much now reading it as it did when I wrote it.

Brian: Jason stole my thunder here, since the first one he alluded to is my favorite as well. Another favorite of mine, though, takes place when one of the tough guys in the group ends up having a case of mistaken identity with one of the female characters. A bird is also involved in this mix-up, but I'm not going to say how because it's a fun surprise!
Favorite character?
Jason: That's like asking a parent to choose their favorite child! I think we had the most fun writing Tavis, but there are elements of each character that has endeared them to me - even the villains!

Brian: It is very easy to like Tavis, and I very much do, but I think I'll say Thaddine here. She's got a quip for just about every situation when she isn't too busy having more balls than half the men in our story, so it's fun to write about her!

Jason: I'm a dedicated husband and father of five boys so that fills up any "free time" I have, but film, music, and my volunteer efforts are the passions that drive me apart from writing.

Brian: I'm a husband and father to our daughter, and since she is our first child and is less than a year old a lot of my free time is spent with her and my wife. Apart from that though, I enjoy watching sports like baseball, hockey, soccer and football here and there, and I like to collect signed copies of CDs as well as rare and signed books.
About the Authors:
Jason Rowe is a published nonfiction writer and journalist, and has been a creative writer professionally for nearly 20 years. Jason first had the vision for the XII saga in 2001 but it was only after sharing the vision with friend and co-worker, Brian Palmer, in the summer of 2008 that the two decided to join creative forces and give birth to this 8-book series including an imagined future earth, a daunting cast of heroes and villains, and the underlying message of the series as a whole.
Brian Palmer has been a creative freelance writer for print and online publications in the music, literary, film and sports worlds since 2004. He graduated with a degree in English and an emphasis in creative writing from the University of Puget Sound in 2000. The XII saga is unlike any creative endeavor he has ever participated in, and it thrills him to no end.
