Seeing Birds
Guest Post by Jason Stemple

Jason's dad, David Stemple

As a child my father introduced me to birds and birding along with fishing and hunting. This early indoctrination led me to a life spent enjoying, relishing and later making a living off of exploring the outdoors and the many forms of wildlife found there. We started birding at an early age in our family: from watching the feeders from the breakfast table, to walks out our back door to the river, to cross-country journeys exploring our National Parks. No moment was too big or too small to be interrupted
by a bird sighting.
After college I became a professional photographer shooting skiing and rafting in the Colorado Rockies to pay the bills and while birding had become less a part of my life, they were always there seemingly calling me back. As I branched out more into nature photography it was my bird images that stood out above all my other works. I have no doubt that it was my long-ingrained love and to some extent knowledge of birds that gave me the ability to capture images that hopefully inspire others to explore the avian world.
As my photography career progressed I published a number books with my mother, Jane Yolen, most focusing on nature and many solely about birds. More recently my work has mostly involved fishing but not a day goes by on the water that I’m not distracted by some birdlife and more often than not, my camera automatically turns that way and fires off a few shots.
For me, from the start, it was not necessarily about the particular pursuit; birding, fishing, skiing…it was just about being out in the natural world alone, or with friends or family and seeing something new each day. It just so happened that birds brought me there first.
