Review - Epic Fail!! by Claire LaZebnik

Epic Fail
Epic Fail
by Claire LaZebnik
Paperback, 295 pages
Published August 2nd 2011 by HarperTeen

Premise:

At Coral Tree Prep in Los Angeles, who your parents are can make or break you. Cast in point:

- As the son of Hollywood royalty, Derek Edwards is pretty much prince of the school - not that he deigns to acknowledge many of his loyal subjects.
- As the daughter of the new principal, Elise Benton isn't exactly on everyone's must-sit-next-to-at-lunch list.

When Elise's beautiful sister catches the eye of the prince's best friend, Elise gets to spend a lot of time with Derek, making her the envy of every girl on campus. Except she refuses to fall for any of his rare smiles and instead warms up to his enemy, the surprisingly charming social outcast Webster Grant. But in this hilarious tale of fitting in and flirting, not all snubs are undeserved, not all celebrity brats are bratty, and pride and prejudice can get in the way of true love for only so long.

My Review:

Fun zippy Pride & Prejudice – at high school - read!!

The author followed Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (Hereafter "P&P") so closely, that there’s no way for me to review it without comparing. I say that with some fear because the author also followed P&P so closely that my awe for Jane Austen has increased. (Thank you, Claire!!)

It’s as if she plucked some key elements out of P&P and successfully grafted ‘em into a new setting. Which is amazing.

Elise – is just like Elizabeth Bennet. JUST. LIKE. She’s got that quirky dry humor touched with sarcasm. She has that strong emotional reaction to everyone else’s opinions. She has that adoration for her sister and that fierce protectiveness toward her family. She has that unique backbone that rises to challenges. I seriously love Elise.

Elise’s family is so perfect. Juliana is so sweet and trusting. Layla is trying so hard and yet is so obnoxious and gullible. I wanted to strangle her. The other sister… adds that touch of “too many sisters”. Lol. The mom – how hilarious!!  She’s great from her style in clothes to her quirky glasses to her skewed priorities – GREAT!  And the father is right there, too, perfectly transported to modern day.

That’s not all… Chase and his sister, not to mention the devious guy who nearly ruins everyone’s lives, are all perfect.  Mr Devious (my nickname in some lunatic attempt to not give away any spoilers, as if that's possible) is, in fact, tastefully transported. You know..... no eloping here, which is again, an excellent adjustment to the times.

Derek… is great a great Mr Darcy. As a movie star’s kid, he is reclusive and irritating and famous and filthy rich, but also loaded with real character qualities that just… make him perfect.

The only downside – as I already mentioned – is that P&P is followed so closely, it was, um, predictable

If, however, you are a P&P junkie and can already quote it – Epic Fail is a fun alternative to another reread. *hand raised wryly* That’s me!  Or if Austen’s period writing style is too tedious to fully appreciate all the wit and you keep bogging down in lengthy paragraphs that everyone claims are so wonderful… well, then, you are CRAZY and had BETTER GO GET P&P - I mean, Epic Fail is a fast-paced, fun book. And then you can join the rest of us P&P adoring fans!  Yea!!

My Rating: 3.5 - 4.0  - Here's my Breakdown:  The characters are 4.5's. The adjusted times & situations are 4's. The predictability & the trimming of Austen's masterpiece is a 3. So....... um.... 3.8596?  Obviously I have trouble coloring in the lines.

Back to the Books! Woop!!

Hosted by I Am a Reader, Not a Writer & Buried in Books...

Back to the Books sounds like fun... but really, getting back into the rhythm of school is WORK!!  Our family starts next week. I've got all the supplies and new clothes and I'm getting all four of 'em packed and ready for their first day back to school.

*sigh*

Summer is fun. I love the sunshine and the long days. Maybe we goof around too much, sure. I'll admit it. We need school to get rollin' again. But...

*sigh*

Fortunately for me, there's an awesome car show the second weekend in September. So we tolerate a few studious days and then we kick it at the beach with a bunch of hot rods. THEN we buckle down to the books. That little bit of extra FLING! feels very... adventurous.

I'd like to share some of that... FLING! for this giveaway. Epic Fail is all about the wonderful story of Pride & Prejudice in a modern high school setting. It's hilariously fun!  I know... 'cause I'm offering MY book to be won. Yes, that means this is a used book by mua reading in the sunlit football practice fields.

I'll post my review while this giveaway's running. Believe me... if you like Pride & Prejudice, you'll like this book. If you haven't read Pride & Prejudice... you NEED this book!!  If you don't like Pride & Prejudice, I must ask you... why are you reading this?!  JK - if you don't like it, though, don't tell me unless you wanna see my Momma-Bear side. (You don't.)

If you're like me, you like to read Pride & Prejudice every year... only with so many wonderful reading choices out there, it's hard to reread anything. This book is PERFECT - it's new, and yet, it's veeerrrry Pride & Prejudice.

Don't worry about the title. Not a prediction of anything related to you and school. Just saying.

Wait, wait, wait... wait... WAIT!!

Did someone just say they don't own Pride & Prejudice?!  Please, speak up!!

Everyone with an eReader should have a copy. Or two, like me. (Is someone collecting copies?)

I have these two:

25 Favorite Novels (Anne of Green Gables/Avonlea, Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, Emma, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Little Women, My Antonia, O Pioneers!, Scarlet Letter/Pimpernel, Wives & Daughters, +)  Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin\

Click on 'em to go to the Barnes & Noble site to pick 'em up for $.99. Yes... less then a buck!! No excuses. Hunt down some change in the couch and get yourself a copy of this awesome book!!

I also found this tempting morsel while finding those links for you:

Complete Works of Jane Austen, With Biography (Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Mansfield Park, Persuasion, Northanger Abbey, Early Works)

It's $2.99, which is a bit more spendy, but "complete works of Jane Austen" is mega-enticing!!

Can't leave out the Kindle peeps:

$.99

This has worked in my favor, I tell ya. I'm passing out the classics like school started already!!  PLUS offering the chance to WIN a little bit of fun. To go with all that hard studying.

It's not Monday - Chit Chat #3

teaDo you ever have a Tuesday that looks a lot like a leftover Monday?

At least the last Monday in August is not as oppressive as the first Monday in January. (First month, first big To-Do day!) The first Monday back at school rivals it, though... and lots of folks is feelin' that today. I mean, yesterday.

Not me. School doesn't start for my fam 'til next Tuesday. So I have no excuse. For today feeling like yesterday.  Except...

I just have way too much stuff I put off. Procrastination'll do that to ya: lengthen days into weeks. When I'm trying to drag out my beautiful long summer days, procrastination backfires. The sun setting earlier every night doesn't help. Seriously... what's up with that?!

Procrastination.

The best book news of this week (so far) is that I rescued some books from a sweet person I'd lent them to who wasn't gettin' 'round to 'em.  It felt like a small victory worth a classic inept hiney wiggle. (I'm not a dancer. But that doesn't stop me from puttin' on some moves.)

Epic FailHaving rescued Epic Fail, I had to read a bit. This is one of those books I won last fall from Jaded Little Girl - a sort of celebration for not achieving the NaNoWriMo word count. Ha!

Could this get more pathetic? I'm losing days, I can't dance and now I'm celebrating failure.

See what I mean about this Tuesday acting a lot like a Monday?!

My point is... Epic Fail is absolutely hilarious. I brought it to football practice last night and was cracking up on the field. Lol.

It cracks me up just thinking about it. I look like an obsessed mom watching my son practice football when most the other parents just drop their boys off. The few parents lingering stand around on the grass or lounge on the distant bleachers. Not me. I got my collapsible seat, at least two books, a sweat shirt for when the sun sets, and a drink or two (and maybe a snack.) I spread out and get comfy. And when the coach sidelines my son on a play, I'm right there seeing if he's injured. (Or whatever.)

Last night I was bursting out with random guffaws over Claire LaZebnik's writing. Looking around to see if anyone noticed. Lol. As if that was a concern.

Pride and PrejudiceThe story is following Pride & Prejudice rather closely so far, if in a completely new context. The fun part is how well the author remembers important points to Jane Austen's incredible story. She's getting the nuances right with all the characters. Absolutely laugh-out-loud fun.

I have read P&P every summer for awhile now. Maybe this will satisfy my craving.

This reminds me of caps for sale Andreas Noßmann
It's not just NOT Monday... it's also NOT the end of summer for me. I'm not done with all my plans for summer, so they're spilling over into September. I didn't read all the books I planned on, primarily.  Or write as much as I wanted. These are things I must tackle responsibly. It is my obligation. And I'm willing to sacrifice what I must to fulfill these important obligations. I am, after all, a reader of upstanding character.

I know I'm not the only one out there. Is there anyone else that will bravely make a stand and say, "I am willing to accomplish my summer reading goals even in September!"?

It's ok if you feel somewhat intimidated. Grand goals like these are not upheld easily, otherwise everyone would do it. Bravely make a stand for your TBR pile. You're not alone.
