For Joy's Sake
(Where Secrets Are Safe #12)

There's something about Julie

Hunter Rafferty is committed to two things: his bachelor lifestyle and his career as an event planner. But working with Julie Fairbanks on a fund-raising gala is quickly becoming the best part of his day. He can't stop thinking about the mysterious beauty—despite her refusals to have dinner with him.

Everything changes when seven-year-old Joy comes to The Lemonade Stand, a shelter for victims of abuse. To help Joy overcome her trauma and the mystery surrounding it, Hunter and Julie push beyond their boundaries, confronting their own past pain…and feelings for each other.

CHAPTER TWO, Part 4

The threat of tears nearly strangled her. Lila was wrong. In the end, everyone was alone. Alone in your mind. In your secret places. Alone in a pain only you could feel. In a fear only you could fight.
No one else could know what it felt like to live with your own inability to trust.
Lila’s hand on Julie’s knee brought her gaze back to the older woman. “You’re interesting, Julie,” Lila said. “You’ve got such a unique perspective. Don’t forget I’ve read your stories...”
She blinked. Only Colin, Chantel and a few other people knew that she was the author of the newly published and already bestselling children’s book series, Being Amy. Lila was one of the few. Julie had told the director and Sara about the books when she’d offered to do some storytelling sessions the year before.
“Don’t worry, no one else here knows,” Lila said, cluing Julie into the fact that she must be showing her horror at the thought of becoming a public figure of any kind. “I gave you my word.”
She nodded. At Chantel’s urging, because her sister-in-law believed that Julie’s books could help children understand the challenges they faced, she’d agreed to have her work looked at. Chantel had an aunt by marriage whose family owned a small nonfiction publishing house—and who had long-term acquaintances with fiction publishing professionals. Within six weeks of sending the original file, Julie had a contract.
“So what do you say? Will you join us for dinner?”
The mere idea of venturing out far enough to go out for no purpose other than to socialize gave her a panic attack...and yet...she’d loved being part of a tribe...
But, in the past, when push had come to shove, when there’d been pressure put on their families by the police commissioner and his best friend, Smyth Sr.—a man who’d owned most of their investments—when they could’ve been ostracized from their privileged social group, her friends had all chosen to believe that a brutal date rape had been consensual sex.
Not everyone was out for the money, Julie told herself.
Her protective voice spoke up. But everyone looked out for self. In spite of others’ needs.
Except at The Lemonade Stand, where Lila and Julie and Lynn spent most of their waking hours. She could trust them to be real friends.
I will not let the bastard win...
“When did you have in mind?” Every nerve trembled, but when Lila gave her a date and time, Julie agreed to the outing.
And got out of The Lemonade Stand as quickly as she could.

Lost Time (Excerpt #1)
D. L. Orton

Between Two Evils #2

I lie in the greenish half-light, my lungs on fire, panic forcing out any rational thought.
And then I remember where I am—or rather where I should be.
I pound my fists against the translucent coffin lid until I manage to hit the release lever. The top pops open and frigid air rushes in, smelling of damp earth and evergreens.
I gasp for breath, my heart pounding.
The last thing I remember is a panicked voice shouting to abort the mission. Stop the countdown because…
Mierda, I can’t remember.
But it definitely wasn’t good.
I lift my head, and a blinding pain stabs me in the temples. I take a ragged breath, wrestling down the urge to vomit, and open my eyes. All my body parts seem to be intact, but my skin is wrinkled like I stayed in the ocean too long.
I collapse back into the condensation-covered sarcophagus—and notice bright red drops spattered across the internal wall. Now that I think about it, I can feel the cut in my right palm.
Probably from that damn seashell.
I wipe my bloody hand on the towel—the only thing between me and the full Monty—and shiver in the frosty air.
It’s way too cold for a tropical beach.
Where am I?
I inhale the cold air. It doesn’t smell like the tropics, either.
Maybe I landed in a cloud forest or on the slope of a volcano?
At least I didn’t arrive under water.

On Tour: THE SEAL'S RETURN by @PatriciaPotter #Excerpt #Giveaway w/ @PrismBookTours

On Tour with Prism Book Tours.

The SEAL's Return
(Home to Covenant Falls #4)
by Patricia Potter
Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 384 pages
February 1st 2017 by Harlequin Superromance

This is the home he never expected…

With a terrifying ordeal behind him, former navy SEAL Jubal Pierce was supposed to stay in Covenant Falls, Colorado, for only a day or two. That's it. He's not prepared to put down roots here—no matter how intriguing the town's new doctor happens to be. Not to mention Dr. Lisa Redding's teen brother is on a troubled path that's all too familiar. Suddenly Jubal finds himself entangled in the community and with deep, unfamiliar feelings for Lisa. But maybe a little detour is just what a warrior needs to find his true purpose…and true love.

EXCERPT ON THE TOUR

Jubal Pierce plucked the letter he'd received yesterday from the trash can. He'd read it, then discarded it. This time he reread it slowly and considered the proposal.

His first inclination had been no. Hell no!

That was his answer to almost everything these days.

He took a swallow of Jameson Irish Whiskey as he glanced around the San Diego apartment he shared with three other SEALs. He was the only one in residence now. The others were on missions. He usually saved the Jameson for the end of successful missions. Now it signaled the end, period.

THE OUTLAW'S SECRET by @StacyHenry #Excerpt #3 on Tour w/ @PrismBookTours #GiftCard #Giveaway

The Outlaw's Secret
by Stacy Henrie
Christian Historical Romance
Paperback & ebook, 288 pages
February 7th 2017 by Love Inspired Historical

Lawman in Disguise

Getting taken hostage by a gang of train robbers wasn't in dime novelist Essie Vanderfair's plans, but interviewing these men could make her career soar. Especially since the gang includes legendary outlaw Tex Beckett, better known as the Texas Titan. Tex is famed for his protection of women and children, so she'll be fine…right?

Keeping the gang in line was hard enough before a stubborn, beautiful writer interfered. Now Tex is scrambling to keep Essie safe, to gather evidence against the gang and most of all to hide his dangerous secrets. First, that he's a detective working undercover. And second, that he's not the Texas Titan at all, but Tex's twin brother, Tate Beckett.

Excerpt #3:

Reality doused Essie with a coldness that made her shiver. He meant to leave you here. That’s why he was so generous with his canteen. She balled her hands into fists and glared at the man’s form in the distance. How could she have fallen for such a trick? He hadn’t wanted her to come along from the beginning, so he’d cleverly worked out a way to leave her behind.
“Ooo,” she muttered, kicking at a clump of sagebrush. Handsome or not, the man certainly wasn’t a gentleman, as the newspapers claimed. Unless his benevolent treatment meant leaving women and children to fend for themselves. But, like his boss, Fletcher, the Texan had underestimated her. Landing himself in the same unsavory category as Victor Daley. “And I will best you both,” she hollered to the quiet prairie.
The horses shifted at her impassioned cry, drawing her attention. While none of them sported a saddle, they'd been left with their bridles on and Essie had no qualms about riding bareback. How many times as a young girl had she taken off without a saddle on her horse, Brownie?
Gathering her valise and the Texan’s canteen, she approached the tired-looking horses. She would have to take the ride slow, at least at first. A dappled gray gelding studied her in turn as she scrutinized each horse. The star on its forehead reminded her of Brownie.
“I think we’ll give you a try.”
She led the horse away from his companions to a sizable rock. Gripping the handle of her valise between her teeth, she held the horse’s reins in hand and climbed onto the rock. From there she easily slipped onto the horse’s back.
Bending down, she scooped up the canteen from off the rock and settled her things in her lap. “All right, boy. Let’s go.” She nudged the horse in the flanks, pointing him in the direction the robbers had taken minutes before.
Once they’d broken free of the chain of hills, Essie studied the ground for tracks. She’d done extensive research for her book The Bounty Hunter Betrayed and now it was about to pay off in real life. The Texan had messed with the wrong dime novelist if he thought her incapable of doing something as simple as follow after them.
Sure enough she spotted the impression of horse hooves in the dirt and a partially trampled sagebrush farther on. If she kept heading in that same direction, she would eventually stumble into the trio.
She bent forward over the horse and coaxed it to go faster. There were interviews to conduct. And no one, not even a handsome, sly, back-stabbing Texan, was going to stop her.

#Excerpt V of WEB OF DECEIT by @CathLanigan #HistoricalRomance 50GC #Giveaway on tour with @PrismBook Tours

On Tour with Prism Book Tours.

Web of Deceit
by Catherine Lanigan
Adult Historical Romance
ebook, 462 pages
June 4th 2016 by Cat Nolan Publishing

A Passion she could not deny—A lie she could never escape—

From the depths of a London slum, Amanda Granger created an illusion of wealth and breeding that became her passport into New York society. With her dazzling beauty and the ease with which she lived her lie, Amanda captivated an adoring public and drove men to bold and dangerous passions.

But for all her fierce ambition, all her daring dreams, Amanda Granger knew that her heart’s desires were held together by the fragile threads of deception and secrets. Triumph would always be elusive until she escaped from her web of deceit.

CHAPTER ONE, PART V (see the tour below to catch excerpt parts 1-4)

Just then there was a solid, purposeful knock at the door. Amanda knew instantly it was Lady Kent. She glanced disapprovingly at the untouched breakfast tray, walked over to Eloise, fingered the blue ribbon, and turned to Amanda. “I ordered palest pink, Amanda. Have you gone against my orders again?”
I thought that...’’
“This is a debutante ball, Amanda. I know you have no knowledge of these things, being from the . . . with your background. But all the girls must wear white. Only pale pink bordering on white is acceptable. And these gloves. They are vulgar and crass.”
“They’re effective,” Amanda mumbled to herself, knowing Lady Kent would hear her.
“Amanda, your impertinence lately has been intolerable, but I have been patient. Don’t press me again.”
Amanda curtsied. “Yes, ma’am.”
“Take the gloves back and bring the pink.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Amanda replied, looking to Eloise for salvation.
Eloise dropped her head and removed the gloves. Lady Kent picked up her skirt and left the room.
“Why didn’t you tell her you wanted the blue, Eloise? She would give in to you.”
“She was right. The rules are very specific about these things. I can’t breach etiquette,” Eloise said, firmly reciting the credo that had always been her life.
“What good are rules if they don’t help you?” Amanda asked as Eloise went into the adjoining bathroom and quietly shut the door on Amanda and her probing words.
Amanda ironed Eloise’s white silk and lace ball gown, taking great care not to crease the four rows of wide ruffles at the bodice. She could hear the carpenters banging upstairs on the main floor and Sally, the head housekeeper, yelling at them about the sawdust, their grimy shoes, and their overall lack of concern for her and her “schedule.”
Schedules—--Amanda remembered when everything at Kent Manor had run like a precisely tuned Swiss clock. That was when her mother, Harriet Granger, had been head housekeeper. From nearly the day she was born, Amanda had accompanied her mother to Kent Manor. She had learned to walk in the back gardens and spoke her first words in this very kitchen. Amanda had grown up with Eloise, Emily, and Jonathon Kent. She‘d felt like they were her brother and sisters. Though she lived on Shelton Street in two cubicles with her own brother, Andrew, Kent Manor was more a home to her.

A man of his word

Dr. Bloom Freelander thought it was safe to breathe again when Detective Sam Larson put her abusive ex away for good. She's been moving on, running a private practice and providing psychiatry services to The Lemonade Stand women's shelter. But now that her ex is a free man, she's in danger once again.

Forced into protective custody, Bloom can't help but fall for her protector. But she has every reason to doubt the handsome detective's word. Sam broke his promise to her once. Who says he won't break it again—along with her heart this time?

GoodreadsAmazonBarnes & NobleHarlequin

Excerpt

WTF.

Detective Samuel Larson, thirty-seven-year-old semi-star of the Santa Raquel Police Department, leaned back in the old squeaky desk chair he’d inherited, along with the scarred desk, when he’d been awarded his detective’s shield.

He didn’t give a rat’s ass about the desk. Never had. He stared at the emailed report he’d just opened.

WTF.

Two years? The asshole was out in two years?

How was he going to… "Damn ."

“Something wrong?” Brand new detective Chantel Harris, who’d recently transferred from a beat cop to internet crime investigation, happened to be walking by Sam’s desk as that last expletive slipped out.
Sam knew Chantel. Not from any work they’d done together on the job, but because they were both members of the Santa Raquel High Risk Team—an organization of professionals in all fields who came into contact with victims of domestic violence. From nurse to school counselor, cops, doctors, lawyers, the team had formed an intricate communication system geared solely to prevent domestic violence deaths.

“Yeah, something’s wrong,” he said, running a hand through blond hair that was too long by department standards. No one seemed to care. Least of all him. “One of our High Risk cases just threw up on us.”
In silk pants and a jacket that looked like it had cost a year of his car payments, the no-nonsense, no makeup, blond-hair-tied-back cop sat down hard in the varnish-less wooden chair beside his desk.
“Which one?” Her lips were white with tension.

“This one was before your time,” he quickly assured her.

“But not before yours.”

“Right.” He looked at his screen again, seething angry energy. Rocking back and forth in the swivel chair that had seen better days, leaning on one elbow as he chewed the side of his finger.

Chantel glanced at the screen. “Released on a technicality,” she read the portion he’d scrolled to.
“The lawyer who prosecuted him was Trevor Banyon.” He chewed harder.

Chantel’s drawn out curse was only slightly less harsh than his mental one. “How many are they up to now? Twenty-four? I can’t believe that many cases have been overturned.  A top prosecutor with an illegal gun trade on the side." She shook her head. "The guy should be shot.”

With one of his own weapons, Sam agreed silently.

“I thought all of his cases were drug related,” Chantel leaned over and, taking charge of his mouse, scrolled some more. “What was he doing on one of our cases?”

“The perp was a professor of psychology at U of C. The victim, his wife, was an associate professor he’d mentored.”

“The authority figure,” Chantel’s tone dripped disrespect. He knew it because it was a sentiment he shared.

Answering to a boss was one thing—having someone assume that they knew what was best for you better than you did, or thought that they had the right to force their will onto another—the idea pissed him off. Royally.
