Her choice. His consequences.

Nurse Sophie Mattuchi has seen a lot of angry patients in the ER, but no one's ever rattled her like Jack Carter. He has no right to blame her for his friend's death. Sophie did everything she could. Didn't she? Yet his accusations sting, and that sets off all kinds of internal alarms. She's never cared this much about any man's opinion of her. But Jack is different. He stirs up feelings. Strong feelings. Guilt. Anger. Attraction. Curiosity. Sympathy. Sophie's definitely not interested in Jack, but even if she was, he'd never forgive her for the decision she made that night in the hospital. Would he?

HUMANS CAN BE SO SILLY

Humans think that dogs don’t understand them, unless they’re giving orders. Sit. Roll over. Eat. Poop.  Stuff like that. But it’s not true.

As a dog, I hear a lot of gossip and advice-giving. I heard every word of Sophie’s concern for me when she and Mrs. Beabots were making tarts for the Recovery Alliance.

Jack’s office is a hot-bed of confidential material. Of course, this is due to his clients who are buying insurance to protect their children and families. But sometimes, they don’t want insurance for errant children or grandchildren. Sometimes they have lost their jobs and have to stop their premiums. Or some have medical issues. It’s really sad what humans have to deal with sometimes. No wonder they need us dogs so desperately to love them.

Also, I’ve noticed that a great deal of information is exchanged in kitchens. I heard all about Rafe intending to propose to Olivia before anyone in town knew of it, because Mrs. Beabots was making lemonade for Gina Barzonni who was gushing about the ring Rafe bought.

Beau and Bebe

Yeah, kitchens are great.  Being a dog, I’m always perusing corners, under tables and especially under cooking islands for scraps, bits of food that fall off plates and trays. Being a little dog, hardly anyone notices I’m around. I’ve noticed this is not the case for my friend, Beau, the Golden Retriever. He has to smile at his master, Sarah or Luke. Their kids sneak him treats. Big ones, actually. Me? I’m satisfied with a cracker or piece of cookie. Although, I have to mention that I’m very partial to Mrs. Beabots’s smoked Scottish Salmon. She serves this sometimes in her front parlor along with her special mint tea. The tea has bourbon in it, but I’ve never had any. Sophie said it wasn’t good for me. I’ll take her word for it.

I’ve also noticed that male masters not only talk to dogs, but expect answers. Take Jack, for example. One day while he was drinking a beer on his deck, he saw Sophie, Mrs. Beabots, Rafe and Olivia and the whole Indian Lake gang down at the beach. He hadn’t talked to Sophie in days and he was pretty depressed. Moping around. Listening to really bad music.

He got out his binoculars and scoped it out before the idea hit him that maybe he should join the party. He actually asked me what he should do. See? Obstinate. I’d say clueless, but he’s the hero of the story, so I don’t want to cast aspersions. I had to bark three times answering his question before he got the hint to put on his bathing trunks and go to the party.
