For the Love of Rankins by Carol Ross

I love the romance genre. Not only is it what I read the most, I can’t imagine writing for any other. Harlequin’s Heartwarming line, in particular, is ideal for me. The emphasis on feelings like affection, respect, admiration and “like” reflects the necessities (in my opinion) that make up a strong and lasting relationship. True love, in other words, is the hallmark of Heartwarming.

As we all know, actions speak louder than words. This is just as true on the page as it is in life. As an author, it’s fun to delve into these feelings and explore what makes one person fall for another. What little act of kindness, grand romantic gesture, teasing comment, or funny joke will make one person look at another in a new light? What will ultimately cause a person fall for another? How much adversity can two people face and still have their love come out even stronger in the end? I love trying to answer these questions.

I especially like answering them amidst the backdrop of small town life. Relationships, habits, traditions, and all the accompanying quirks of a small town help give the story depth. I love small towns. I grew up in one. Back in my younger days, I left my rural roots for a few years to try the city thing. I had some fun times, but the city and I did not mesh. I returned secure in the knowledge that I am at my core a country girl. I live in a different (even smaller) small town now. There have been four books and a short story so far, and I can’t help but share a piece of my small town girl self in each and every Seasons of Alaska story I write. I can’t help it. It just happens.

I like to think my folksy background lends my characters credibility, while my love for small-town life and my interest/obsession with Alaska gives Rankins authenticity. Just as it’s easy to get attached to the characters you write, the same holds true for the setting. And with Rankins front and center in every book, I’ll admit I’ve fallen in love with this little town.

Beautiful Alaska. This looks a lot like how I imagine Rankins.

I hope if you read some Seasons of Alaska books, you’ll fall in love with Rankins, too.

Somehow he has to keep his distance from one while he spends time with the other.

  4. Excellent story. Rankins felt so real. Laura, what a great place and boy do I understand the dilemma of working a full time job and having to give up something you love to do.
