Introducing Snack the Dog

A couple years ago, I was going through kind of a rough time.  Some personal problems and life outcomes had me feeling powerless and depressed.  I decided it was time for a change, so I adopted a dog.  And I picked one who seemed like he felt a bit like I did: lost, worried, a little beaten up.

I spent the next couple years rehabilitating him and it changed my life. The little guy has been a challenge, but he’s brought me so much joy too.  And I learned that when we make a difference in an animal’s life, they make a difference in ours.

When Lori Allen, the heroine of my new book, Return to Marker Ranch, was going through a rough time, I knew she needed a special dog too.  A dog who would bring her out of her protective shell and teach her what she needed to know about living.  So I sent her a dog named Coyote Snack.  Or Snack, for short.

Image

Snack looks a lot like my dog.  He’s small, with a dust-mop of zany fur that shoots out in every direction.  Like my dog, Snack snorts and sneezes, has boundless energy and a wide doggy smile. But my dog has a fearful nature.  His go-to emotion is worry.  I wanted Snack to be the opposite. He needed to be fearless, so he could bring Lori out of the fears that were stifling her life.

It was a joy to write about Snack. The moment he showed up in the book, I could tell that he was just what Lori needed.  But I needed to figure out how he’d fit into Lori’s life, since she’s a rancher and Snack is too small to be a regular ranch dog.  He wouldn’t be able to keep up with a horse.  But I wondered if perhaps he could ride one?  A quick Internet search proved that he could!

I hope you enjoy Snack’s role in the story.  And thanks for joining me to celebrate the release of Return to Marker Ranch!

This wild stallion can't be tamed

Todd Williams is still the naive idealist he was in college. Only now he's endangering lives—Nora Hoffman's to be exact. Nora hasn't seen Todd since he decided that saving the rain forest was more important than their relationship. Until the night she's nearly crushed by the stampede he causes. Now Todd is determined to make amends, for everything.

She may not agree with his methods, but even Nora can't deny the importance of his fight to save the wild horses. With the attraction between them still sizzling and the fate of the horses in the balance, Nora must decide just how much she's willing to risk.

Claire McEwen lives by the ocean in Northern California with her family and a scruffy, mischievous terrier. When not dreaming up new stories, she can be found digging in her garden with a lot of enthusiasm but, unfortunately, no green thumb.

Claire enjoys discovering flea-market treasures, walking on the beach, dancing, traveling, and reading, of course! She loves to write complex heroes and heroines, who grow and find themselves through their search for love.

  1. That cover looks so cozy; love the blurb too - there's something about character with PTSD that always got to me. Not to mention Snack the dog! (That's such a cute name for a dog by the way).
