Author Interview
1. What is your motivation behind HEIR OF THUNDER? Why did you want to write it?
Quite a few years ago (2008 to be precise) Cold Play released 'Viva La Vida', and I fell in love with that song, particularly the opening lines:
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own
Listening to that song, I got a pretty instant vision of a character who was powerful, but lost her kingdom somehow. That idea evolved into HEIR OF THUNDER. Evie was never really the ruler of her kingdom, but she had always supposed that she would be. That possibility is ripped away from her before she gets the chance to find out what kind of queen she could be.
2. What do you hope readers take with them after they’ve read it?
I usually write my main characters as strong women, or women with the potential for great strength. Evie starts out rather young and naive, but gains confidence and independence as she faces challenges throughout the book. I want readers to be able to see themselves, or the women in their lives, as this kind of character: someone who can be strong, independent, and capable, whether they have super powers or not. I also want the reader to take away a sense of wonder and fun. The true purpose of Heir of Thunder is to entertain and give readers a place to escape for a little while. I hope they enjoy the world and characters so much that they want to come back and spend more time with them.
3. Do you have a favorite scene that you can share with us?
My favorite secondary characters in the book are the Fantazikes, a band of nomads who roam the world in airships fueled by lightning. I really enjoy the parts of the book where Evie gets to know the Fantazikes and spend time with them aboard their airships.
4. If you could sum the book up in one sentence, what would you say?
Heir of Thunder is about a naive girl who doesn’t know herself or her strengths, but by surviving series of adventures and challenges, she becomes the kind of young woman who has the potential to be a mighty queen.
5. Share something about you that is unique - maybe about how/where you write... or favorite snack foods?
My bio says I like to ride motorcycles with my family. But “like” is probably not the right word. I hold on, grit my teeth, and try not to crash, and if I succeed, then riding can be fun. Anyway, I’m not sure people believe that about me sometimes, so here’s pictorial evidence (you’ll have to take my word that it’s me under the helmet).
