Forming a new group they dub the Seeders, Fi, Asher, and Sean are joined by a new addition as they set out to bring hope and support to the Topsiders in the form of radios and heirloom seeds. Their experiences Topside prepare them for the threat from marauding gangs they call Lobos, but it is a different, less obvious sort of threat that takes them by surprise. As radio broadcasts begin to reconnect Eden and the Topsiders, the Seeders stumble upon mysterious broadcasts from unknown stations. When two of their own new radio stations go silent within days of each other, Fi and her companions realize that something is terribly wrong. Eden finds itself pitted against a growing and unknown force as their very mission lights the flames of war.

In SEEDS OF WAR, we learn a bit more about how the Famine was engineered. Yeah, I said engineered. I won’t spoil the details for you, but I could see something like it happening in real life someday, which is also scary.

 I read this slower than usual, devouring every word. It reads more like a history book than fiction, and my mind keeps reaching, trying to figure out what I would do in a situation like that or like that. These books will stick with me for a very long time.

My personal favorite recipe is actually not one of her copycat recipes, but something she came up with on her own. It's a deep-dish cookie pie. So what's the catch? IT'S MADE OUT OF CHICKPEAS!

27 – LeeannaMe Review of Emergence

The other thing I really liked about EMERGENCE was Fi’s character development. Fi has come a very long way from the girl she was in EDEN’S ROOT. Though she’s been kick ass throughout the trilogy, I did have trouble believing adults would listen to a fourteen-year-old. InEMERGENCE, Fi questions that herself, something I appreciated it. But even better was watching her crack, the strain of losing Eden and her family too much to bear after all the other hardships she’s suffered. Fi emerged from the “nothingness” (her term for depression) an even stronger character, and I liked seeing her vulnerable, because that made her even more kick ass and realistic to me.

28 – TheBookish Daydreamer - Review of Eden's Root

The whole time while reading this novel, I worried. This extreme realism was terrifying and made me question everything.

I also believe that this book hits home with me and our lifestyle because my husband and I are preppers. We prepare for the worst case senario, we have stored canned goods and even a bucket of food. We are working on saving heirloom seeds to plant again in garden next year.

I found this recipe on Pinterest. 

Ingredients
2 Large Bananas 
1 Cup of Quick Oats
Then add in things like Chocolate Chips, Shredded Coconut, Nuts, Dried Fruit... Anything you Heart Desires really. 

Bake @ 350 for 15 min! And your DONE!

      Fi pelted through the superstore, her eyes fixed on the propped door. 50 yards, she thought, not looking back. The guy rumbled and slammed through the aisles like a bull, but his drunkenness didn’t slow him down. 30 yards. She lowered her head, her legs screaming as she kicked her absolute hardest.
     Something drilled through her from the side, knocking her nearly senseless, her head slamming into a tower of detergent that toppled, slamming into both her and the body that had taken her down. Hands grabbed for her wrists, but with her pack beneath her, she was hard to pin. She heard the slap of feet and through her swimming senses she knew that there were two attackers and she was down.
     “Not good, Fi,” Sensei Bob chided her.
     Her mind whirled, confused. She wrestled with her attacker. He was trying to straddle her but she couldn’t let herself be pinned. If there were two, she’d be overpowered.
     “Parry, don’t thrust, Fi.”
     The voice was clear as a bell and she knew what she had to do just as clearly. She wrestled her hardest, screaming and kicking until her attacker gripped harder, pushing back. Then she went limp and he fell on top of her, shocked that the resistance had melted. She flipped hard, slamming his head with her pack and shoulder. He grunted and she wriggled away, popping up and fleeing, her eyes filling as she sprinted.
     “Keep running, little b***!” A voice called. “We’ll catch you anyway.”
     Ice froze the tears in her lids. She stopped dead and spun, pulling the .22 with shaking hands. She aimed it, her eyes staring down the barrel at her tormentor. “No you wont!” she cried. “You stay right there!”
     He sniggered, kicking at his friend, who was still getting to his feet. He kept walking toward her.
     “I mean it!” she shouted. “I’ll ***ing shoot you.”
     He kept walking.
     She shifted her aim to his thigh. The outside. No arteries, she thought, her stomach turning as her finger squeezed.
     He shouted, his eyes widening as his jeans ripped open and exploded in fresh fingerpaint red. He sank to one knee, screaming as his friend’s hands flew to his face, his curses drowned by the sound of the fire reverberating in her brain.
     “Run, Fi!” her Sensei commanded. She turned and raced away, the gun still in her hand as she hit the trees and flew over boulders and through brambles, tugging free with screams of desperation.
     She didn’t stop for ten minutes until she tripped and rolled down an embankment into a ditch. Her shoulder and knee struck painfully, but she didn’t feel the impacts. Nothing hit her through the terror. What if they’d caught her? They’d had her, they’d had her down. She was all alone. She looked around, her cheeks wet with tears as they ravaged her, raging and scraping her throat and nose and eyes and ears, all shredding. She was all alone.
     Her shoulders shook as she put her head in her hands, her gun still clutched in her hand, the fingers petrified in their last action. There was no one. No Sean. No Papa. No Mama. No God

There is nothing like talking with an author about their book. Rachel Fisher has honored me with wonderful email replies and gave me permission to share her responses with you!  In the last few months, Rachel has started an awesome newsletter to keep us fans posted on what's going on and communicate with everyone.  If you don't know Rachel and her books, yet, I am so happy to share with you!! If you do, you'll enjoy this conversation!!

Do you have a favorite scene?   <<<so tough.  I am really torn, almost like it depends on my mood.  One scene that is a fave actually, is the Sean POV when he and Sara go on her first Seek and they use Prime Numbers to keep her calm.  

“Would you like me to continue with the primes?”   Her singsong voice made him laugh.

“Definitely.  You shouldn’t keep a talent like that hidden.”  She snorted and he heard the sound of boxes ripping open as numbers rained down on him in steady drops.

I LOVE that scene and it must have come through because a lot of people remark on it.   

But if I can only pick one...wow, that is tough.  I really love Fi and Asher's argument when he finds out she's *******.  When he drove his sword into the ground in frustration it was so out of character, it showed how angry he was and how powerless he felt.  Like...this sword can't do me any good anymore...not for this.  You remember that he's very young too, and that no matter how old you are, this stuff is scary.  And I love that they were "safe" enough with each other to really ARGUE.  To say things that were hard and bare their souls.  There's no other way to make it through all that life throws at you, I don't think.  And when he pushes her too far and then melts, remembering how much more scared she must feel, it's absolution.  They're in it together.  So even though it's an argument, I think that may be my favorite scene in the whole darned thing...  Because no matter what tries to pull them apart, they always find their way back to each other.

I might choose the canyon scene.  <<<Oh, I AM partial to the canyon scene too.  It is so much a part of who Fi is and becomes as an adult.  That rooting to the Earth is a heartbeat for her, it's why she can't stay underground.  Despite the dangers, she's a wild creature now, for better or worse.>>>

Hilarious. You really can't pick just one!! Lol. I love it.

Why is scientific ethics such a central theme in your story?  <<<I can't seem to operate outside that context.  The more I learned about it in school, the more fascinated I became.  The stuff Fi says about biology being the study of magic is 100% my perspective.  I got closer to the truth, and it got farther away from me.  For some reason, that made me more respectful.  Nature is awesome and majestic and powerful, but so is Man.  Will we be able to survive each other?  I don't know.>>>

I really can't take credit for asking this amazing question... our emailing plus reading Seeds of War really brought up this ethical theme. Fi has powerful struggles over what's Ok or not Ok depending on original motives. Does good motives make bad things Ok?!  Even if it kills?!?! Big Question!!

Please share why Truefood is a real quest for you!!  <<<As a cancer survivor, I am mostly self-interested.  I want to freaking live.  And, yes, I am normal.  I break my perfect diet at times and live without shuddering in fear because frankly, that's not survivable.  But my DREAM is for all of us to start a conversation...on a large scale.  As a people, a nation, maybe a world.  I'm frightened of what we've done to food in the past half-century and the impact it's having on us...but I"m also afraid for developing countries that are adopting our food systems and preferences.  I just want us to talk about this stuff.  The thing that makes me most upset is that we're not talking about it.  For me, Fi's charisma is a vehicle.  She can "tell" the story of Sickfood and Truefood without it being overbearing or pushy.  If it makes anyone think, or pause, or talk to a friend about it, then I'm pretty happy about that.  

I follow Rachel's blog... she has lots of interesting recipe and food posts, which are amazing, but I love her book review posts. If you're thinking of reading ANY Dystopian books... AT ALL!!  Hop over and check out her reviews!!  She's reads up in the genre she writes in!!  Gotta love it!

My Review:

I love this cover. It drew me to read this book even before the author contacted me to read it. Something about the green and the withering tree plus the calm determination on the girl's face. I was intrigued.

Even better to hear the dystopian premise. The author sets up a disastrous sci-fi post-apocolyptic setting based on disease-infested food. What if everything you ate would kill you slowly, but there was no alternative? 

Rather than focus on the horrible effects of deathly food, however, we get to see Fi and her group of friends and family as they refuse to take disaster as the only outcome for their situation. Fi is the center of the group, and at 15 she's ready to step up and do everything she needs to, including making hard decisions and hanging onto hope.

I thoroughly enjoyed Fi. She is a resilient character who develops with the situation. I enjoyed Sean, as well, as her right hand man, in a way, and then Asher, who's story develops separately until they meet. :-)

My favorite part is the concept of the disaster. There's enough truth in the core of the story to add extra depth to the question, "could this really happen?!" And my respect for the author and this concept has only grown as she was kind enough to answer some interview questions. (Yay!)

First, My Rating: 2.5 - which is a culmination of conflicting feelings. The execution felt very raw to me, unfinished, maybe. I had trouble losing myself inside the story and Fi's character plus my attention wandered. On the other hand, the characters are complex, the plot is complicated, the conflicts are layered, and the resolution is wonderful... with plenty of room for more story. Basically, this story wasn't my cup of tea, but I am looking forward to more books from Rachel Fisher!

You mentioned that this is one book out of a series?  Can you tell me about what the second book is about? when it's coming? 
  
This is the first book in a Trilogy.  I am well into the writing of the second book . The title (I think I've decided that it's the title, not working title) is Seeds of War.

The second book begins with the connection with the Diaspora II - Babylon colony.  This discovery gives the colonists of Eden the reassurance they need to go ahead with the next phase of their plan, which is Seeding.  Fi, Asher, Sean and a mystery fourth addition go Topside on Seeding missions.  They bear both heirloom seeds and radios with solar arrays so that they can set up Topsider families as 'stations'.  In this way they can start to build a network of small settlements that can communicate with one another and can sustain themselves moving forward.  The idea is to stabilize and rebuild.  

Unfortunately, there are others with very different plans for the future of the Famine survivors.  What begins as mysterious radio broadcasts from an unknown preacher begins to spread and new 'stations' pop up spreading rhetoric and opposition to Eden and the Seeders.  They believe that science got humanity into this mess in the first place and that God punished us for our hubris.  Though seemingly harmless zealotry at first, this opposition begins to grow sinister as words become deeds and Eden's new stations are attacked.  Many also report that technology-based resources everywhere are being destroyed and burned.  As Eden and the Seeders begin to understand the scope of this new threat, the very thing they fought so hard to preserve, their Seeds, become the flash point for war...

I am so interested in how Fi, Sean & Asher manage!! This sounds very exciting!

How did you come up with this idea for Eden's Root? Did you know about food sources first? or did you study about food because of your book? or both?

I am not sure exactly how Eden's Root came to life as a story, in the sense that Fi and her compatriots just started to speak to me one day when I got a cold and was down on the couch with my laptop.  I have no idea where she came from, but she seems to have opened up a whole floodgate in my mind that I am unable to close off at this point.  :)  

I did know the information about food first.  I have studied a lot about food because I am a recent (4 year) cancer survivor and when I was diagnosed I dove into the research trying to figure out what had happened to me.  I also wanted to know how I could eat in the future to have some protective effects against relapse.  I studied to be a researcher myself so when I encounter a problem, that is my first instinct.  Once I researched food thoroughly, I became incredibly depressed.  It turns out that so much of what we are eating is incredibly harmful and dangerous.  The more I learned, the more I began to be AFRAID of food.  And that is when the idea first started to click.  How diabolical and awful, I thought.  To be AFRAID of something you have no choice but to consume?  I think the kernel of the idea grew from there.  I turned it from a story about slow death into a story about both slow death and quick death, and the fight to right that wrong.

Please tell me something about your website and what you're doing with recipes and information and stuff!!

Well, I wanted to blog about food because so many of my friends and family have questions and they know that I've worked to become knowledgeable about it.  They also know that I bring a scientists' skepticism and a survivor's sense of humor to my narrative, so I think that my blog gives people good information without trying to guilt or browbeat them into 'eating right'.  Often I just share my own experiences and journey in trying to be vegan (my choice) and gluten-free (no choice...tummy don't play that anymore) in a world that is entirely based on meat, cheese, and bread.  Having grown up in the Philadelphia area, I consider steak and peppers comfort food, so it has been a big transition to now think of lentils that way!   

And then I discovered book blogging and couldn't resist it either, seeing as I am doing the reading anyway and I am incredibly opinionated.  :)  So my blog ends up being a bit of a split-personality between food and books, but since it's not making me any money it's all mine to ruin - ha!

Ha! Too funny. I have learned a LOT about glutten-free in the past year or so, from a good friend who has to, as well, plus some stuff about reading labels to see what I'm feeding the family, and it is overwhelming. I think it makes sense to see you had such a strong motivation with surviving cancer, (Wow!!!) 'cause just eating "right" is very difficult nowadays... um, hence the scary truth behind Eden's Root!!!

Actually... not that I review cookbooks with any grace at all, but I recently reviewed The World Tastes Good that my friend wrote and I'm going to be reviewing The Naked Foods Cookbook in the next week or so-ish.

   

And yes... that is my rather pathetic attempt of declaring that I know what eating healthy looks like!!  Kind of!!  The truth is, though, I have NO IDEA, really. Our recent Gung-Ho Diet Part I really showed me how much I don't know because I kicked ALL of the sugar out of the house, which basically left us NOTHING TO EAT.  Hahahahaha  Seriously.

So I know enough to be rather in awe and take the concept in Eden's Root seriously and then my enthusiasm deflates a bit to cheer you on from the sidelines.  And be grateful that you maintain a BLOG!!
