He lives by the law.

She’s running for her life.

After forensic accountant Beth Greenwood uncovers a money-laundering scheme tying her company to the organization that murdered her mentor, she knows she needs to go into hiding. With ruthless killers in pursuit, she’s forced to rely on homeland security agent Corbin Ross’s protection—even as his investigation suggests Beth is complicit in embezzlement. Can their uneasy alliance develop into something deeper—and keep them alive?

Homeland Security
The details are sketchy, and the government has been tight-lipped, but various reports have concluded that the worst cyberattack in US history started in a cybercafe in Afghanistan. An American Pentagon worker (presumably), using the internet services of a foreign cafĂ©, picked up a ‘cyber worm’ on his computer. He then transferred data from the infected computer to a thumb drive. The virus hitched a ride. When that same thumb drive was plugged into the Pentagon computer system, the worm went wild.
Again, we don’t know the extent of the breach, but it’s believed the code spread undetected through classified systems, establishing a ‘beachhead’ from which data could be transferred to servers under foreign control. A simple little thumb drive caused (an estimated) billions of dollars of damage in man hours and additional security measures. Not to mention the compromise to the American intelligence community.
According to the Homeland Security website: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) cyber mission contributes to enhancing the security and resilience of the nation’s critical information infrastructure and the internet. (There are a whole bunch of other words outlining how they plan on doing this, but you get the gist.)
Think for a moment what would happen if the electrical grid in your community went down indefinitely. Say, for example, that in Florida, the grid went down on the hottest day of summer—in Nebraska, the middle of December. According to Homeland Security, Russia has already conducted a multi-stage effort to target critical infrastructure.
For hostile foreign powers, creating chaos isn’t the end game, it’s only the beginning. When nations are focused inward on chaos, foreign powers can act unchecked.
For my latest book, I took a teeny-tiny little bit of artistic license and imagined my hero as working for the cyber division of Homeland Security when he discovers a money laundering scheme supporting a terrorist organization through foreign banks. He’s attempting to track the American connection to the terrorist cell when he stumbles upon my heroine. Danger and romance ensue in equal measures!
The cyber world is incredibly vulnerable, as we’ve seen over and over again on the news. Have you ever been involved in a data breach where your online information was stolen – and were there any consequences for you?
