Tour Interview and Giveaway - Promises by Amber Garr

On Tour with Bookshelf Confessions...

Promises (The Syrenka Series, #1)Promises
by Amber Garr
Paperback, 251 pages
Published (first published December 2011)

Premise: Ganked from Goodreads:

Sometimes following your heart can end up destroying the ones you love.

When seventeen-year-old Eviana Dumahl is faced with the responsibility of an arranged marriage and clan leadership, she is forced to choose between the life required of a mermaid and one of a teenage girl simply infatuated with the wrong guy. Kain, her devoted fiancĂ© would make a wonderful husband except that she’s been in love with Brendan, a shape-shifting selkie, ever since they were kids. Choosing to abandon her family, her clan, and her life with Kain will have dire consequences far beyond anything she could have imagined.

A war is brewing amongst the clans and Eviana unwittingly becomes a pawn in the intricate schemes of a twisted mastermind. With Brendan’s life on the line, she has no choice but to involve those who she once considered friends. Amidst encountering senseless tragedies and immense loss, Eviana discovers that she is more valuable as a clan leader than anyone ever suspected. Her survival is not only dependent upon the loyalty of her friends, but also on her acceptance of a life that she had so adamantly tried to escape.

Promises is the first book of The Syrenka Series trilogy following Eviana and her friends through the perils of growing up in a discrete world that inherently threatens human society.

Welcome to Colorimetry, Amber!  We're happy to have you!  The Syrenka Series looks so great. I can't wait to read your books. Thank you for stopping by to answer some questions!

Tell us a little of how you were inspired to write this series! What sparked the idea?

The first chapter of Promises was initially a short story.  I have always loved mermaids, wanted to be one actually, and when I discovered the selkie folklore I thought it would be neat to write a "forbidden" love story between the two species.  But once I set that aside, the ideas kept coming to me and I couldn't stop writing.  So one short story quickly turned into an entire trilogy!

That's so crazy-awesome!  I have always loved mermaids, too, and "forbidden" is intriguing!

What is your favorite scene or who is your favorite character?

I had a lot of fun writing the scene in Betrayal between Eviana and Graham when he is training her.  It was nice to write a guy who has the kind of attitude Graham does and it was important that Eviana reacted differently to him.  As far as characters go, I think my favorite is Abhainn.  I never knew what he was going to say and I love his accent!

Ah.... you tantalize us with references to scenes and characters we have to read to find!
Noodles

Share something personal!!  Favorite food?  Pet?

I have three pets - Noodles (dog), Screamie (cat), and Bitsy (cat).  I don't cook, so my favorite food is usually pasta since I can at least boil water.  And...I can't whistle.
Screamie

Bitsy
Lol. You must really like pasta if you named your dog Noodles!!  That's funny.  Don't feel bad about the cooking thing... I've burnt boiled eggs. Twice. Which is almost admitting that I can't boil water.  ???

Thanks for the pix!!  Noodles looks so innocent!!

    1. jajajajaja I snorted last night on my way to bed. What in the world did you do to get boiled eggs on the ceiling?! Do they pop at some point? I've caught mine when that wonderful smell of burning boiled eggs permeates the house and wakens me from my blog-writing daze. Please, do tell!!!

  8. For me, it's bread. It either doesn't rise or it flattens when I pull off the cover or i made the water too hot and the yeast never rises or what ever , ugghh it can be frustrating. So I stopped for years and then I tried again and bamm, I am right back where I started!!!! GRRRR!!!

  9. My Mom could cook anything except for grilled cheese sandwiches. She burned them everytime. I grew up to be just like my Mom. lol Now my husband is the cook in the family and I give in to him because he's always watching everything that I put into what ever I'm making & he's so Picky about what he'll eat. He is a great cook but a very messy cook & I get clean up duty. I can't complain though because I really don't like to cook that much. Thanks for the cute pics of your 4 legged family. Mine actually don't complain about my cooking, the cats love anything I make with tuna. Thanks so much for the great giveaways and interview.

  10. Everything that isn't baked but cooked is an issue where measurements are required it's fine but if there is any variation well then I have issues. Soup and rice in particular.
