My Review

This book is absolutely perfect as a conversation piece, a table-top entertainment for friends and guests or... yes, a kids book. What is amazing to me is that the result of the whole is so poetic. There is poetry on nearly every page, but the composition of the book follows the same, beautiful prose. The pictures are absolutely stunning. The little fact summaries of birds - the parts that define a bird or the types of birds - have a similar beauty. This book is obviously written by people who look at nature with open eyes and admiration... and know how to share it with us. I did not see birds the same way after reading through the book and seeing the pictures. This beautiful hard cover has nestled inside me and changed my perspective.

I would say... this book is perfect for introducing someone to a love of birds, young or old. Anyone who has wondered why people love birds should pick this one up to get a rich, decadent answer to your question. If you already love birds... then this is a great book to share your love with us average folks who never knew to look so closely.  I suppose this is what we expect from National Geographic... and Jane Yolen!  And her wonderful family.
