Autism Awareness Giveaway Hop

Hosted by

Quite honestly there are some things I am an observer of and not qualified to say much about. I have a dear friend who has raised autistic children and I have cheered in awe from the sidelines... but beyond that, all I know is that I don't know anything.

I'm pretty clear about what I don't know...

I don't know WHY or HOW or WHAT to do about it. I'm very careful to keep any thoughts to myself, usually, because there are some things that if you haven't lived it, you just don't know.

But I also like the idea of working with whatever ya got in whatever situation. I like the idea of not labeling anyone "sick" if they are "autistic". Have you watched that show Touch?  I like the way little autistic Jake has value in the world and in his father's life. There are things considered "normal" that he can't do, but he improves the world with his life. I like that perspective towards people - all people. We all have reason and purpose.

For the Autistic Awareness hop, I am giving away a chance to see inside an autistic mind through Elizabeth Moon's book, The Speed of Dark. I am looking forward to reading this book myself. I have heard from many that it is the best of her books, and I love her writing.  Better yet, she takes autism into the future where there is a "cure" and the main character is not so sure he even wants to be "cured".

The Speed of DarkThe Speed of Dark
by Elizabeth Moon
Published June 2005 by Del Rey

In the near future, disease will be a condition of the past. Most genetic defects will be removed at birth; the remaining during infancy. Unfortunately, there will be a generation left behind. For members of that missed generation, small advances will be made. Through various programs, they will be taught to get along in the world despite their differences. They will be made active and contributing members of society. But they will never be normal.
Thoughtful, provocative, poignant, unforgettable, The Speed of Dark is a gripping exploration into the mind of an autistic person as he struggles with profound questions of humanity and matters of the heart
Rather than an awesome question, I'm going to leave an open-ended comment opportunity. If you have a story related to Autism to share, I would love it!  Or a link to someone who does or a favorite book or experience or whatever. Since I'm sooooo clueless, help me out!!
