Daughter of Light by Morgan L Busse - giveaway and review on the Team Novel Teen Tour

Daughter of Light by Morgan L. Busse

Daughter of Light
by Morgan L Busse

What if with one touch you could see inside the soul?

Rowen Mar finds a strange mark on her hand, and she is banished from her village as a witch. She covers the mark with a leather glove and seeks sanctuary in the White City. She lives in fear that if she touches another person, the power inside her will trigger again, a terrifying power that allows her to see the darkness inside the human heart . . .

But the mark is a summons, and those called cannot hide forever. For the salvation of her people lies within her hand.

Morgan

Morgan L. Busse writes speculative fiction for the adult market. She is the author of Daughter of Light and Son of Truth, the first two books in a series from Marcher Lord Press. Morgan lives in the Midwest with her husband and four children.

I've been thinking of my review all day...  I haven't finished the book, yet, but my opinion is spilling out already, anyway. So this is my early opinion... PRE-review:

First thoughts:

The writing style - WOW!  I love the way Morgan thinks. Fast-paced, precise, urgent, logical, fluid. I really enjoy her writing.

Content: First half is fantasy for anyone and everyone. Mid-way took a dive into a very Christian perspective with Word appearing to Rowan. Borderline edgy-uncomfy-strong. The story then picks up again with the great fantasy, making me wish that encounter could've been adapted to the storyline smoother. I'm left with lots thoughts, anyway!

Characters: I love Rowan. She makes sense. The side characters are deep, motivated, varied. Amazing. I can't help like Caleb, oddly enough, and Lore, absolutely, and even the tangled red head. What's her name? She's cool.

World-building:  OMG. Ok, this is where this book totally soars off the planet. There are so many things going on and they all flow so beautifully. People from the sea city have color-changing eyes depending on the moods of the ocean?!  YES PLEASE!!!  Seriously creepy bad guys - multiple kinds, mysterious like Lord of the Rings mysterious.  Landscape I can see from the text without consulting the map.  The desert scene from the balcony is achingly beautiful. I love this world

Rating and more thoughts to follow... what a unique book!!!

Review Tour Highlight and Giveaway - The Revised Life of Ellie Sweet by Stephanie Morrill

The-Revised-Life-of-Ellie-S
The Revised Life of Ellie Sweet
by Stephanie Morrill

Ellie Sweet is a lot of things—good girl, novelist, silent adorer of the new boy at school, Palmer. But when “outcast” gets added to the list, she decides it’s time to take reality into her own hands … and tweak it as needed.
In the pages of her book, she’s Lady Gabrielle, favorite of the medieval Italian court. Her once-friends are reduced to catty ladies-in-waiting, and the too-charming Palmer—who in real life never spares her a second word—gets to be nothing more than a rake wracked by unrequited love for her. She even has a perfect real-life villain in the brooding Chase, who hails from the wrong side of town.
But just when she’s getting along great in her fictional world, the real one throws her a few curves. With Chase pursuing her, Palmer wanting to date her—but in secret—and the details of her manuscript going public, Ellie suddenly receives more attention than she ever really wanted. And when her former-friends discover what she’s been writing, they’re determined to teach Ellie a lesson about the severe consequences of using her pen as her sword.

On Tour! Storm by Evan Angler

The Book:
Storm
by Evan Angler

In a future United States under the power of a charismatic leader, everyone gets the Mark at age thirteen. The Mark lets citizen shop, go to school, and even get medical care—without it, you are on your own. Few refuse to get the Mark. Those who do . . . disappear.
Logan Langly went in to get his Mark, but he backed out at the last minute. Ever since, he’s been on the run from government agents and on a quest to find his sister Lily, who disappeared when she went to get her Mark five years earlier. His journey leads him to befriend the Dust, a vast network of Markless individuals who dissent against the iron-grip rule of the government. Along the way to the capital to find Lily, the Dust receive some startling information from the Markless community, opening their eyes to the message of Christianity and warning that humanity is now entering the End of Days.
In Storm, Logan and his friends are the leaders of the Markless revolution. But while some Markless are fighting Chancellor Cylis’ army, the Dust is busy trying to find a cure for a horrible epidemic sweeping through the Marked. And it’s difficult for them to know who to trust, especially when they aren’t sure if Logan’s sister Lily, one of the commanders in Cylis’ army, is on their side or not. And all across the nation—and the world—the weather has become less stable and a storm is brewing that bigger than any of them could have ever imagined.

The Review Tour

The Author:

Evan AnglerEvan Angler is safe, for now. He lives without the Mark, evading DOME and writing in the shadows of Beacon.

As a kid he was quiet and well-behaved, having grown up in a town not unlike Spokie, where he enjoyed music, drawing, hover-dodge, astrophysics, hiking, virtual reality . . .

None of that matters now.

Evan Angler is the author of SWIPE. But if anyone asks, you know nothing about it, and you didn't hear anything from him. Don't make eye contact if you see him. Don't call his name out loud. He's in enough trouble already.

And so are you, if you've read his books.

Tour Stop - Failstate by John W Otte

FailstateFailstate
by John W Otte
Paperback, 416 pages
Published April 1st 2012 by Marcher Lord Press

Premise:
Why did Robin Laughlin (aka. Failstate) think being a superhero on a reality show would be a good idea again?
Things seemed so simple: win the show, become an official, licensed hero.
But with his brother, Ben (aka. Gauntlet) stealing America's heart and his own powers proving too unwieldy even for the monitored studio challenges, Robin begins to wonder if his calling isn't to save the world after all.
Until one of his competitors is murdered.
Vowing to find the killer, Robin sets out on a very real quest to unmask the hidden villain. Can Robin find justice? Or will his lunk of a big brother ruin everything?
Publishers Weekly Starred Review:
“Otte nails the concept . . . He balances fantasy with teen hormones in a clever and page-turning debut . . . The amusing noirish atmosphere of the setting draws older readers . . . A TV show full of sequel possibilities.”

My Progress:

I am just over 1/4 way through Failstate, which is hardly enough for a full review. Obviously. But I am never short on OPINION!!  I have lots already.

Like, what's up with this cover? I expected to find comic book drawings when I opened the book. I didn't, but I haven't been disappointed, either. I mean, with a cover like that, I expected action, and I've gotten bucket-fulls right off the gate.

My PhotoI did not expect to enjoy the character of Failstate (or Robin) so darn much. (The character in the middle. He doesn't look exciting, does he?!) That has taken me by surprise. He is withdrawn for obvious reasons, when he is in his "super-hero" state, he is ugly enough to make people sick, literally pukey-sick. It's hard for Robin to feel amazing when he has to hide behind a mask. But this guy's troubles are only getting started. He's also got this strong super-power that is nearly impossible to control, and yet not "cool", either. He's got the quite-alive hormones of a young guy, but not the looks (as a hero or not) to attract girls' attention. Worse, his relationship with his mom is estranged and I'm getting some hints to deep reasons, but I don't know why, yet.  All of that would be manageable, though, if his brother wasn't the complete opposite. Yep. It's no wonder I'm feeling sympathetic for this great guy.

I also did not expect to fall in love with this world so quickly. In this reality, some people have powers, some are useful, some not-so-much. A few figure out how to "save the day", like stop a robbery in a rough part of town. There's even a few idolized Heroes that have been recognized as "great".  I love the way Robin has his own favorites. I love the way everyone is so darn real, gritty, faulty, REAL, even when they're so unbelievably loaded with superpowers. Too fun.

There are a few other things that stand out. One is how Robin and his family attend church and pray to God. It's delivered in that same, this-is-life sort of attitude that is fun. Another is how the writing style would be a fast read for my middle-grader kids, but I don't feel too old to read it, either. It's pretty cool to find a book with enough challenges and foreboding to capture my interest, but enough action that I'm bettin' my boys would love it, too. You know? And then there's the Game Show setting. I watch way too many reality shows, and I'm getting a kick out of being behind the scenes of one. It's early enough in the season that no one's a celebrity, yet, but lots of people know a little about all of them. Perfect.

Today I was supposed to post my review with the rest of the Team Novel Teen Tour... everyone else's review links are below. So, yea, I'm totally LAME since I haven't finished the book, yet. (I'm tired of complaining about my computer problems... you can review past posts to catch my drama.) So, I shot an email off to John W Otte with some interview questions and I'm hoping he'll get back to me by the time I finish my review on a future post. Hey... maybe I'll even get a book to give away!!  :-D  I think life should be good or even better... so I'm going to take advantage of my personal issues and highlight this fun book twice instead of once. So... STAY TUNED for more of Failstate. I'm not finished with it, yet!!!

Woop!

Tour Review - Interrupted by Rachel Coker

Interrupted: Life Beyond Words
Interrupted: Life Beyond Words
by Rachel Coker
Harcover, 320 pages
Published February 14th 2012 by Zondervan

Premise:
Can love really heal all things? If Sam Carroll hadn't shown up, she might have been able to get to her mother in time. Instead, Allie Everly finds herself at a funeral, mourning the loss of her beloved mother. She is dealt another blow when, a few hours later, she is sent from Tennessee to Maine to become the daughter of Miss Beatrice Lovell, a prim woman with a faith Allie cannot accept.
Poetry and letters written to her mother become the only things keeping Allie's heart from hardening completely. But then Sam arrives for the summer, and with him comes many confusing emotions, both toward him and the people around her. As World War II looms, Allie will be forced to decide whether hanging on to the past is worth losing her chance to be loved.
My Review:

Um... Wow!!

I think age disappears in writing, I really do. But I've never read a book where I felt so completely like I was 14 again. The incredible thing about Rachel Coker is not that she has such a good grasp on youth... she is a youth!!  But that her writing is so seamlessly smooth!!  She has skill and perspective that make this book very unique.

On my copy there's a quote from Publisher's Weekly: "Coker is one to watch" and I have to agree 100%.

Interrupted has a somber tone. The main character, Alcyone, faces some difficult circumstances and grows hard & bitter. Her friend, Sam, is a neat character. Both of them are complicated, multi-layered. I was pretty much in awe of all the supporting cast. They are alive and vibrant.

The setting is beautiful and completely 1930 - 1940's. I could picture the lake, the ocean, the beach, the local hang-out. There was old-time chivalry, parties with dancing, cute polka dot dresses. In fact, "cute" describes the main feel of reading, rather like a (somber) flitting butterfly dancing along Ally's inner conflict.

It feels weird to close the book and find myself in the present day. The pace of life and the values of the community were very refreshing. Ally's search for God and meaning was realistic, too. I would have liked more romance, maybe.  And maybe a little less time-jumping, 'cause that pulled me out of the moment, away from my connection with Ally, and left me catching up. But that just brings me around full circle to the beginning - I was just transported over seventy years back in time, where I felt completely at home. So... Wow!

My Rating: 3.5 - Worth the Time, Cute and better-than-cute.

Review - Halflings by Heather Burch

Halflings (Halflings, #1)Halflings
by Heather Burch
Paperback, 228 pages
Published February 1st 2012 by Zondervan Publishing

Premise: Ganked from Goodreads:
After being inexplicably targeted by an evil intent on harming her at any cost, seventeen-year-old Nikki finds herself under the watchful guardianship of three mysterious young men who call themselves halflings. Sworn to defend her, misfits Mace, Raven, and Vine battle to keep Nikki safe while hiding their deepest secret—and the wings that come with.

A growing attraction between Nikki and two of her protectors presents a whole other danger. While she risks a broken heart, Mace and Raven could lose everything, including their souls. As the mysteries behind the boys’ powers, as well as her role in a scientist’s dark plan, unfold, Nikki is faced with choices that will affect the future of an entire race of heavenly beings, as well as the precarious equilibrium of the earthly world.

My Review:

This is a fun book.

We get to know Nikki, Nicole Youngblood, but we also get to know Mace & Raven, two of the halfling angels, or "lost boys". They are so different from each other, and we get peaks inside their thoughts and hopes and motivations, right along with Nikki's, so the questions raised are richly complicated. Delightful.

There's plenty of interesting supporting characters, too. The angel in charge, Will, is close to what I'd imagine an angel in the real world, huge and intimidating and slightly mysterious with a big heart. There are some smokin' hot halfling girls, which add a lot of fun tension. I think Zero is my favorite supporting character, he's tall & wiry & likes to eat TV dinners stuffed in his freezer. He's such a tech-type that if someone didn't restock his supply, he wouldn't eat, being so absorbed in his computer. He's so testy, I love him. Krissy, Nikki's best friend, has potential, but fades out of the story early on. I wouldn't be surprised if she returns with more. Damon... now here's a slick snake I loved to hate right from first appearance!!!

The background is interesting. I don't want to give too much away, but this story takes the idea that fallen angels hooking up with females is not good, but rather dangerously bad... and the children of those relationships, the Halflings, are working hard to revert the "bad" on their heavenly assignments, called Journeys, where they help someone in groups of three. Some of the conflict in this story arises from natural rules they can't change. :-)  Who doesn't wanna break a rule?!

What frustrated me most about this story is the emotional highs & lows. I felt tossed around with the drama. Since the highs and lows don't change the story or the characters, I felt yanked back and forth. There's a lot of inflicting emotional pain going around for reasons not resolved within this book. Which.... Grrrrrrrr... (Made me growl in irritation.)

Hmm... so what exactly IS resolved in this book?!  I'm so glad you asked!!!  *ahem* Not so much!!  There are lots of questions raised, which Heather Burch has committed to resolving: Why Nikki?! (Or is she just in the crossfire?!)  Can a halfling hook up with a human?!  I mean, I know what the rules say, but are there hidden loopholes?! (And if so... which one would Nikki fall for?!?!)  Can a Halfling redeem him-or-herself over time... for real?!  How much time?! And what is going on with smooth, rich, soooo helpful Damon?! He's hiding a mystery, I'm sure of it. Plus... what about that HUGE question asked near the end?!  I will remain in complete denial until I get my hands on Guardian in October. Period.

My Rating:  3.5 - Worth the Time to Read. This book might be worth a higher rating, but within these covers, it isn't for me. I need more resolution, for starters, plus purpose behind the drama.

Cover Commentary: This is one of those covers that improves in hard copy. I like the mysterious forest with the girl - she looks like she could take on danger. I've always thought the wings behind her head a little odd. I think they're meant as a sign of protection, always hovering?  The cool part about the cover in my hand is that the trees are glossy, making the mysterious leap out more AND there's some glossy red blood or gashes up from the bottom adding to the premonition of danger.

Sixteen-year-old Olivia Mansfield dreams of a land far, far away. . .A land far away from her stepfather’s abuse and torment.A land far away from her mother’s blind eye.A land far away from the haunting memories of her past.

But then reality sets in, and Olivia knows she must make the best of her dire situation—at least until her high-school graduation. But when poor choices lead Olivia to the brink of a complete breakdown and she finds herself dealing with the unexpected death of her best friend, she comes to a crossroads. Will Olivia find the path to ultimate hope and healing that her heart longs for?Or will the demons from her past prove too much to bear?

As soon as I saw The Wishing Pearl coming up on Team Novel Teen's Tour, I hopped over to Nicole O'Dell's website, which is chock-full of information on her ministry and on her books. In no time, I was full of questions. :-)  I filled out the Contact Form, even though I was sure I wasn't leaving enough time for Nicole to get back to me... but she responded!! She answered my questions and graciously offered a copy of her book!! (Giveaway below!!)

With no further ado, I give you the wonderful Nicole O'Dell:

Nicole O'DellNicole O’Dell, founder of Choose NOW Ministries is a youth culture expert, who writes and speaks to preteens, teenagers, and parents about how to prepare for life’s tough choices. She is the author of a bunch of YA books, including the popular Scenarios for Girls interactive fiction series and the upcoming Diamond Estates Series, 2011-2012. Non-fiction for teens includes Girl Talk, 2/1/12, which she wrote with her two daughters based on their popular blog column by the same name.

The host of Teen Talk Radio where “It's all about choices!”, Nicole dives in on topics like peer pressure, dating, purity, drugs, alcohol, modesty, popularity, decisions about the future, and many other things that might come up along the way. Over the years, Nicole has worked as a youth director, a Bible study leader for women and teens, and a counselor at a crisis pregnancy center. She lives in Illinois with her husband, Wil and her six wonderful kids--including a set of toddler triplets.

1 - How did you get the idea for The Diamond Estates?
me Whos Nicole?
When I was a young teen, I started making some really bad choices in response to some things that happened to me. My life spiraled out of control and I got to the point where I didn’t think I’d get it together unless I got out of my circumstances. I went to live at a residential home for girls called Teen Challenge. I lived there for about eight months and so much of what you read about Diamond Estates is how it was at Teen Challenge in many ways.
Olivia’s story is not completely my own, but her life and the lives of the girls she meets at Diamond Estates (and the ones in books two (The Embittered Ruby, 4/1/12) and three (The Shadowed Onyx, 12/1/12) are all sort of a conglomeration of all I saw and experienced.
Wow. I could tell Diamond Estates was a big idea with three different girls going there, but I did not guess it grew out of personal experience!
2 - What is it like to raise triplets?!?!
Raising triplets is very, very interesting. No day is just like the one before. They are old enough now to be all over the place and into everything. And they work together. Like velociraptors. Really. One will distract me by stuffing the toilet full of toilet paper while the other cuts her hair off like Rapunzel at the end of Tangled.
Think I'm kidding? That happened yesterday. LOL

Yikes!! That is funny. Creative of them!!  (Yikes!)
3 - Tell us about "Girl Talk" and what kinds of questions you and your daughters answer!! How did that get started?

On Girl Talk

Popular blogging trio—mother, Nicole O’Dell, along with daughters, Emily and Natalie—offer trustworthy, biblically-based advice for all your ups, downs, and in-betweens. Culled from actual questions they’ve encountered on their blog site, this fabulous resource offers real-life helps for issues including relationships, character, body image, fashion, gossip, and more. You’ll find 180 questions along with answers and related scripture selections that will both encourage and challenge you in your faith walk.

The book is based on the Girl Talk column we write on my blog at www.nicoleodell.com. We wanted to give girls a place they could go with those tough questions about life. The column grew and the questions built up to the point when we, along with Barbour Publishing, decided to put 180 questions from readers and our answers into a book. But it's not just any book--the vibrant, trendy format has a scrapbook-y feel as each page is full color with graphics galore. Take a look at the trailer to get a better feel for what it looks like:
