I love World Book Night!!!!!! :-D
It's so exciting picking up the books!! It's exciting receiving the notifications... exciting dropping in on the pick-up site and seeing all the boxes with the yellow-n-black label... exciting feeling a part of such a BIG event to lure reluctant or non-readers into the delicious world of BOOKS!!! :-D I just love it.
Here's my box ready for delivery!
I have mid-schoolers, you know... and they're close friends with other reluctant readers. Last year I passed out Ender's Game in Dash's lit class. This year I received Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life and I wanted to find some 6th graders, so I went straight to the teachers I've gotten to know well over the past four years. In cahoots with awesome teachers, we singled out some reluctant readers who could not resist this awesome-looking book by James Patterson:
They are well on their way to being ENTHUSIASTIC readers!!! :-D
Huge "Thank You" to World Book Night... and Barnes & Noble and all the people who made this possible!! Huge THANKS to Damascus Middle School, too, and teachers who go above and beyond - and to the awesome youth showing off their new books!
Spread the awesomeness of World Book Night by sharing on Twitter: #wbn2013 or Facebook. If you posted a story, let me know so I can check it out!!
One more thank you to Alyce @ At Home with Books for hosting Saturday Snapshot! :-D

World Book Night - Deadline TODAY!
World Book Night is really great... for so many reasons. If you're thinking about joining... and receiving a big box of books to share with reluctant readers... the deadline to sign up is TODAY!! Friday, January 25th. (Click the button to go to the website... check it out, sign up! Easy-peasy lemon squeazy!)
Last year I went to Dash's English class at the mid-school and gave them all a copy of Ender's Game. :-D My son is the one in the back row hiding behind his book. Lol.
I picked up my awesome box of books at the local Barnes & Noble. (I love "having to" go to B&N!)

World Book Night! Triumphant!!
The sun hasn't set, but World Book Night is already a HUGE SUCCESS here!!!
I got rather jittery as 1:00 arrived. My appointment at the mid-school was for 1:30, just in time to interrupt the classroom. I arrived with my enticingly labeled box of books. Inside snuggled 20 copies of Ender's Game... a dystopian sci-fi that was sure to be a hit wherever it went!
I checked in at the Mid-School office, although I was prepared for stealth. (Safety first, and all that.) The hall echoed with my steps as my (new!) flip-flops slapped my feet. The class was already in progress, heads bent over books, studying for something diligently. They were already sweating before I even got there, so full of anticipation... or maybe the suddenly hot weather.
I immediately sought out my son, who sat near the front, I saw with relief. The class clowns were lined up under the sweltering window. Then he turned and met my gaze and I snorted. And blinked. He was wearing goofy glasses with huge black rims. Wha?! He slipped them off and pretended they weren't sitting on his desk waiting for his mom to leave. I pretended I hadn't noticed 'til I get him home from school.
Mr. Schearer offered to let me say a few words, which was so kind of him. I coughed and tried to whisper all the important points so he could share. He did a pretty good job. He read Elliot's review outloud, stumbling over the super-honest bits. (Elliot's my 15 yr old cousin, who is the reason behind Ender's Game being one of my choices!!)
My favorite part was when he described "reluctant readers" and how they existed in the world and the entire class snickered with unbelief... or maybe because he was describing each of them!!
Then he had all the kids come to the front to get their books and I bravely took a picture. They were all very nice and excited, including a sub-helper in the back who clutched her book with a huge smile and asked me in a loud whisper if Ender's Game was anything like The Hunger Games? My whispered answer was anything but brief, so I lost her somewhere after "kind of, but..." *shrug* I'm sort of used to over-responding.
The entire box of 20 books was gone so quickly. I paused waiting for lightening to strike the classroom, or something. Instead, the kids filed back to their seats while the grownups read the back cover describing World Book Night. I flipped my arms around a bit in a sort of "goodbye" motion and sidled towards the door, nearly running into the box fan resting on the floor. Mr. Schearer noticed my rapid exit and thanked me for bringing the books... and all the class thanked me as I ran out the door. (Hey, at least I didn't trip.)
It's possible I'm timid in person. Maybe. Even still, that was a lot of fun. I hope I get to read my son's copy of Ender's Game, too. It sounds like a book I'd like a lot!!
En fin... YAY! for World Book Night!!!
If you have a story or post or picture... PLEASE SHARE!! I'd love to hear everyone's experiences!!!

WORLD BOOK NIGHT!
Sign up by February 1st
to be a Giver
for
World Book Night 2012
Have you heard about this total AWESOMENESS, YET?!
Did you sign up?!
Here's the link... go to World Book Night to check it out. There are 30 different books available. You choose one (preferably that you've read!) and then fill out the registration. There is a link for UK & Ireland, too.
On April 23rd there will be 50,000 volunteers handing out 20 books each for free to non & reluctant readers everywhere.
I don't know how they'll choose who and where and everything, but I laid awake in bed imagining who all I would give Hunger Games to, if I was given the opportunity. I would go to the Mid-School here in small-town Oregon and hunt down 12 & 13 year old kids, friends of my very own reluctant reader.
I would talk to his Language Arts teacher, who is one of those amazing people who light up with they talk about books and authors and don't ding 20% off an assignment when it's late because she knows some kids don't want to write and she's teaching LA just to give them all a love of literature... I would talk to her so I didn't miss anyone. And even if I'm not chosen to take part, I want to throw a party on April 23rd!!
What book would like pass out to reluctant readers?!?!
Here we are, passing out the LOVE OF BOOKS to Reluctant Readers - That would be a cool SuperPower for the Giveaway Question, wouldn't it?
